Zinc phosphate
The layer that makes paint last. Without phosphate, the organic adheres to the oxide — and the oxide flakes off.
Zinc phosphate converts the surface into a crystalline layer of phosphates, which gives mechanical and chemical anchorage for paint or organic coating. It is the classic pre-treatment of the automotive industry.
The same porosity that holds the paint holds oil. A phosphated part absorbs protective oil better, drying or not, and reaches the customer without the storage oxidation that shows up on machined parts kept bare. It is the use the line serves in volume, alongside paint pre-treatment.
Where it fits: shafts, bearings, pistons, rings and components that work in an engine block — parts that will receive a finish or go through a storage period before assembly.

The applications that come here.
Before painting
Crystalline base under an organic system: it is what makes paint adhere to the steel instead of to the oxide, which flakes off.
Protective oil absorption
Machined part that will be stored or shipped, protected by drying or non-drying oil that the porous layer retains.
Engine component
Shafts, bearings, pistons and rings that work together as an assembly.
