NanoGalv®
Nanostructured zinc-nickel to ASTM B1025-25 — the same alloy as conventional zinc-nickel, deposited in alternating nanoscale layers. Every figure below carries its coating thickness, its test method and who ran it.
Three points, not the best one.
Published to red rust in ASTM B117. The test data is Modumetal's — they developed the technology and they ran the test, and we name them because a figure without a source is not a figure.
| Coating thickness | Salt spray, to red rust | Test method | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 µm | over 4,000 h | ASTM B117 | Modumetal test data |
| 8 µm | over 7,300 h | ASTM B117 | Modumetal test data |
| ≥ 10 µm | over 10,000 h | ASTM B117 | Modumetal test data |
The underlying test recorded 10,560 h in ASTM B117. Both figures are published on purpose: the exact one alone would suggest a repeatability a single test does not prove, and the range alone would hide the measurement.
What the standard is, and what it is not.
ASTM B1025-25 is the coating specification
It defines composition, grades and acceptance criteria for electrodeposited nanostructured zinc-nickel. It is what your drawing should call out. The current edition was approved in April 2025 — and the edition is part of the specification, not a detail.
ASTM B117 is the test method
It is how the hours above were measured. A specification and a test method are not interchangeable: quoting one where the other belongs describes no coating at all.
The alloy is 12 to 16% nickel, and we measure it
Below that range the coating loses much of its corrosion resistance; above it, the deposit turns brittle and adhesion suffers. None of that shows on the finished part — colour, gloss and thickness look identical. So the alloy is measured by X-ray fluorescence during the process, not assumed.
Fasteners and connectors for offshore service.
ASTM B1025-25 was written for corrosion protection of oil and gas, automotive and aerospace components — fasteners, brackets and housings — and it names offshore and marine environments under saline conditions. That is the service this coating was designed for, and it is the service we apply it in.
Sapucaia holds the exclusive Brazilian licence from Modumetal, and applies it from Guarulhos, São Paulo, under ISO 9001:2015. Coating thickness and alloy are measured in our own laboratory by X-ray fluorescence, with standards traceable to an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory.
What specifiers ask.
What is nanostructured zinc-nickel?
It is zinc-nickel deposited in alternating nanoscale layers rather than as one homogeneous coat. The alloy is the same 12 to 16% nickel; what changes is the structure. A defect that would run straight down to the steel in a conventional deposit instead travels sideways between the layers, which is a far longer path. ASTM named the category: ASTM B1025-25 is the Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Nanostructured Zinc-Nickel Coatings.
How much salt spray does it withstand?
It depends on coating thickness, and we publish all three points rather than the best one. In ASTM B117, to red rust: 5 µm — over 4,000 h; 8 µm — over 7,300 h; ≥ 10 µm — over 10,000 h. The underlying test recorded 10,560 h. All of it is Modumetal test data — they developed the technology and they ran the test. We say so because a number without a source is not a number.
Is ASTM B1025 the source of those hours?
No, and the distinction matters. ASTM B1025-25 is the coating specification — it defines composition, grades and acceptance criteria. ASTM B117 is the test method. The hours above were measured in B117 by Modumetal. Quoting a specification where a test method belongs is the same error as writing "cadmium per salt spray", which specifies no coating at all.
I specified ASTM B841 grade 10. What do I gain by changing?
The same zinc-nickel, deposited. What changes is the structure of the layer, not the material. Nanostructured, under ASTM B1025-25, from 10 µm the Modumetal test in ASTM B117 records over 10,000 h to red rust. The part, the thread and the drawing do not change — only the line it runs on.
