Oil and gas
The Equatorial Margin: a new frontier, and the fastener that will go there
Petrobras has confirmed oil twice at the Morpho well, in the Foz do Amazonas basin. Across the border, in the same belt of basins, Guyana shows what comes next — and what the specification asks of the fastener.
17 October 2026 · Sapucaia
On 14 August 2026 Petrobras announced its first oil discovery at the Morpho well, block FZA-M-59, in the Foz do Amazonas basin. On 2 October came the second: a new, deeper oil-bearing interval in the same well, in 2,886 metres of water. The company has not yet estimated volume or production potential — the samples are still in laboratory analysis.
It is the first exploration well on Brazil's Equatorial Margin since 2015, and Petrobras' 2026–2030 business plan sets aside US$ 2.5 billion and 15 wells for the region, across the Amapá Deep Water, Pará-Maranhão, Barreirinhas and Potiguar basins.
The same belt of basins, across the border
The Equatorial Margin is not an isolated bet. In the same geological belt, Guyana went from zero to one of the largest offshore provinces in the world in less than a decade — and what it shows is what comes after the discovery:
| Guyana project | Status |
|---|---|
| Hammerhead (Stabroek) | final investment decision in September 2025; FPSO awarded to MODEC, first oil planned for 2029 |
| Longtail (Stabroek) | FPSO front-end engineering design (FEED) awarded to SBM Offshore in March 2026 |
| Stabroek block | operated by ExxonMobil, with Chevron and CNOOC as partners |
And the link to Brazil is already on paper: in Brazil's June 2025 ANP licensing round, the Foz do Amazonas blocks went to two consortia — Petrobras with ExxonMobil and Chevron with CNPC. The operators that are in Guyana are on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin too.
Whoever specifies the fastener has already named the coating
An FPSO is, above all, equipment: valves, actuators, instruments, skids, pumps, piping — and thousands of studs and nuts holding all of it together in a marine atmosphere. The coating on those fasteners is not chosen by the shipyard: it is set by the operator's specification, which the equipment manufacturer has to meet.
According to Modumetal, the technology licensor, NanoGalv® is listed in coating specifications of oil and gas operators — among them ExxonMobil GP 56-02-13 and Shell DEP 30.48.00.32, both already among the specifications Sapucaia meets. For an equipment manufacturer that changes the conversation: the coating does not have to be argued from scratch with the operator, because the operator's own specification already knows it.
What nanostructured zinc-nickel delivers, layer by layer
NanoGalv® is nanostructured zinc-nickel, specified under ASTM B1025-25. Salt spray resistance is always tied to coating thickness, and every figure has the same source — Modumetal testing in ASTM B117:
| Thickness | Salt spray · ASTM B117 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 5 µm | over 4,000 h | Modumetal test |
| 8 µm | over 7,300 h | Modumetal test |
| 10 µm and above | over 10,000 h | Modumetal test |
At 10 µm of nanostructured zinc-nickel, NanoGalv® exceeds 10,000 h in ASTM B117, according to Modumetal testing. A thin layer with high resistance is what matters on a fastener: the thread still assembles, and protection does not depend on a thickness the tolerance cannot take.
Sapucaia is the exclusive NanoGalv® licensee in Brazil, and controls every lot in its own laboratory — coating thickness and alloy composition measured by X-ray fluorescence, under ISO 9001:2015.
The fastener arrives ready
For an equipment manufacturer the practical question is not only which coating — it is who guarantees it was applied the way the specification requires. We work in partnership with fastener manufacturers in Brazil: studs and nuts arrive coated, measured and traceable, with the coating application certificate tied to the lot. It is the pillar we call the ready fastener.
The next step
The Equatorial Margin is still finding out how much oil there is. The fastener specification is not: it is already written, and it belongs to the operators that are arriving.
If your equipment is going on an FPSO, send the technical drawing of the part and the project's coating standard to our sales team. With those two we come back with system, class and thickness — not just a price.
